Ruscilli was selected by The Ohio State University to undertake this 240,000 square foot project. During a multi-phase demolition of the existing Robinson Laboratory, new space for the Mechanical Engineering department was constructed. Because Robinson Lab was occupied prior to construction, Ruscilli coordinated the rerouting of traffic and class locations on this “postage stamp” project. Overall, the goal was to provide a building space where the students feel welcome to come and learn. The west building, with four floors, houses laboratories. The east building with five floors, houses classrooms and offices. The north building with three floors, houses administrative offices and student spaces. A 3-story elevated walkway connects the west and east buildings. Student spaces include a large student lounge with adjoining rooms for the student organizations, and even lockers for students to store their books and other belongings while they are at school. The building complex also provided increased space for instructional and research laboratories, and modular laboratory configuration which allows flexibility for subsequent changes as departmental activities evolve. Additional features include an atrium with display space for student projects and outdoor spaces to promote student activities.
