This new $2.7 million, 30,000 square foot AEP Transmission Training Center is located on a 24-acre site adjacent to the AEP Transmission Service Center near Pataskala, Ohio. The building includes a 50-foot high bay with 16,000 square feet of indoor training space that contains a fully operational substation with both digital and electromechanical relay protection and a short transmission line. The working low-voltage transmission substation is contained in an indoor bay measuring 200 feet long, 100 feet wide and 50 feet tall. The facility also features a library, classrooms, lunchroom and offices. The facility is designed to enable year-round training for all three Transmission skill-sets – station line, and protection and control. A 14-acre outdoor hands-on training area contains several transmission line structures to represent the various types of transmission configurations in the AEP System – 765 kV, 345 kV, 138 kV and 69 kV. A live 345 kV line runs across the property for use in training.
